happy birthday winston

MAN OF MAN!!!

While Winston enjoyed himself as the birthday boy, another boy enjoyed himself being every girl's bitch:

But in reality, he only belongs to one girl. Lucky me! :) *whip*

And thank you Pet for your very interesting gift from HK, which came wrapped in a Wanchai map!

Highlander!

Although I have only known you guys for 6 months or less, I really enjoy hanging out with all of you. To those who are going for exchange, Bon Voyage! :)

left english

English is causing the cue ball to spin by intentionally striking it to the left or right of its centre. Hence, a left english is caused by striking the cue ball on the left side of its centre, allowing the cue ball to spin. :)

the simpsons movie

is hilarious!! I went in with low expectations because of the reviews I heard about it, but it was so so funny! Many random happenings but they made the movie what-the-hell kind of funny.

Because of the environmental pollution caused by Homer, Springfield had to be kept in a giant glass dome by the government's environmental pollution authorities - EPA (I wished they did this for Singapore and turn on an air-con perpetually at 18 degrees Celsius). The Simpsons had to flee as the residents in Springfield torched their home. What eventually happened to Springfield and did the Simpsons manage to go back home?

Some parts were just so ridiculously funny and random that you can't help but laugh like an idiot. A little bit better and more dramatic than a usual Simpsons episode. Enjoy! :)

I was elected to lead, not read! - President Arnold Schwarzenegger

p/s: my cute cursor is a tribute to my most favourite character in the Simpsons who is just so so cute because she doesn't talk. I hope my daughter will be as quiet and obedient as her (then again, no talking and crying may mean autism). She sort of saved the day too! :) All hail Maggie Simpson!

9 ball

In 9-ball, on all shots, the player must cause the cue ball to contact the lowest numerical ball. The winner is the player who pockets the 9 (even at anytime during the game). This makes the game tough yet entertaining because while the player tries to pocket the balls numerically, he also has to make sure if he fails, his opponent cannot have the 9 within easy contact. When that happens, both players will end up becoming damn guai lan because they will just happily park the ball at some difficult spot. It's a damn cool game. Congrats to Yang Ching-Shun from Taiwan who won the Guinness 9 Ball Tour Singapore leg. I couldn't find a video of his final game, but this is a cool one where he won a poor Hungarian who could only sit there after breaking the rack and watch Yang (aptly named 清顺) smoothly clean sweep him. Power.

Trivia: In billiards/pool, what is a Left English? :p The answer right up!

sarang haeyo

I have watched many Korean dramas, some made me laugh, most made me cry, while some were a total waste of time. Shallow as it sounds, for me, the most important thing in a Korean drama is not the plot, but whether the cast is good-looking. Don't expect me to watch fat girls jumping around like they are so pretty. If I want to, I can just look into the mirror.

Other important factors include:
1. picturesque scenery - bonus if the show is shot in some beautiful country like Austria :)
2. good fashion sense - extra bonus if the actors and actresses (who should already be good-looking) have good wardrobe managers. That's why I don't really fancy period dramas because women just don't look good with those humongous wigs and men look terrible wearing hats with pendulums.
3. nice background music - I love piano pieces and singers with sweet/romantic voices. Horrible songs really ruin the show.

With that, may I present to you, Wendy's Top 5 Most Memorable Korean Drama Serials (in chronological order of how I watched them)

1. Autumn in My Heart

Junxi and Enxi were children of a rich professor and were believed to be biological siblings until one day when Enxi got involved in a car accident. Upon carrying out blood tests, the family realised that Enxi had been accidently swopped with Xin-ai when they were babies by the negligent hospital nurse. Xin-ai's mother was a poor widow who operated a small restaurant. Xin-ai, being attracted to the fact that her biological parents were damn bloody rich, decided to forsake her poor mother and wanted her rich parents to take her in. Enxi, being a sweet and sympathetic girl, decided to stay with her poor biological mother who was all alone. The rich family left for America. Years later, Junxi became a successful artist and met up with his best friend Taixi (yeah all their names are 'xi'). Coincidentally, Taixi fell in love with the beautiful Enxi. One day, Junxi finally found out that Enxi was the 'sister' his family left alone in Korea. Junxi and Enxi fell in love. Unfortunately, Enxi was suffering from a terminal illness. What will happen to the lovebirds?

Yes it's lame. I know. I fell for it when I was young and innocent back in Secondary School. I cried like hell every time I watched it and when the music played. I love 'A Song for Lady' by H.O.T. The directing sucked and the fashion sense was horrible. But I never regretted watching it because this was the drama that sparked my love for Korean dramas. And Song Hae Gyo is still undeniably the most beautiful actress in Korea. In fact she is the lead actress in 3 out of the 5 dramas in my list.

Sarang rating: 3/5 - it should fail for its lameness but I forgive it since the show ironically sparked my love for Korean shows.

2. All In

Jin Renhe, a street hooligan, has been following his uncle cheating people at illegal gambling dens since young. As a result, he picked up the skills of gambling and bluffing. During one of his narrow escapes from the police, he met Shuyin, whom he fell in love with at first sight. After many narrow escapes from the police, Renhe's uncle decided that Renhe should go to school instead. In school, Renhe befriended Zhengyuan, son of a rich unscrupulous businessman wanting to make it big in the casino industry. On one fateful occasion, Renhe and Zhengyuan set fire to a building without realised that there was someone inside. They were charged with murder but Zhengyuan got away scotfree because of his father's connection. In jail, Renhe continued gambling with the thugs. The thugs bribed the prison wardens to let them leave prison to gamble and Renhe was challenged to a game with a filthy rich businessman but had to escape when the businessman found out that Renhe was playing tricks. Having to run from the police as well as the businessman's gang, he sought the help of Zhengyuan who managed to let him escape to America in a ship. Renhe was sad to leave Korea because of Shuyin, but had no choice. Shuyin was staying in a Catholic orphanage but later decided to work as a dealer in a casino in Jeju island. In America, Renhe met an influential American businessman who auctioned illegally purchased valuable jewellery. In a twist of fate, Renhe's boss had to go to Korea to gamble and the casino was where Shuyin worked as a dealer. Shuyin was arrowed to teach Renhe all the casino games. With his innate talent, Renhe picked up all the skills immediately and became a worldclass poker champion. With Renhe's illegal status in Korea, as well as the dangers of his job as an illegal trader, his love life with Shuyin was at stake when Zhengyuan falls in love with her as well while Renhe was frequently on the run. Did love surpass all?

Another Song Hae Gyo show. This time, I loved the acting because Song Hae Gyo and Lee Byun Hyun really looked good together. I feel that it is a unique Korean show because there were elements of Western influence and the thrill of watching Renhe play poker/baccarat and call for "All In". hahaha.. Cheap thrill..

Sarang rating: 3.5/5 - it helped that this is the only Korean show that Daddy has ever asked me to record when he was working late

3. Full House

After returning from her vacation, aspiring author Han Ji Eun discovers that her family home has been sold - without her consent by her friends - to famous actor Lee Young Jae. Young Jae has been trying to hide out from some nasty rumors about his sexuality and sees a perfect opportunity: he and Ji Eun will enter into a contractual marriage and pretend to be a real couple. In exchange, Ji Eun will do the cooking and cleaning and the house will be hers again after six months. Actually, Young Jae has been allowing the rumors to fly because he's really too afraid to tell his childhood friend Kang Hae Won that he's in love with her. Hae Won is blissfully unaware of Young Jae's feelings because she is love with their other childhood friend, Yoo Min Hyuk. As if that weren't enough of a love tangle, Ji Eun starts to fall for Young Jae despite their promise to keep things 'just business', and Min Hyuk starts to fall for Ji Eun. Who will Ji Eun end up with?

I LOVE LOVE FULL HOUSE!!! I love Song Hae Gyo, I love Kim Sung Soo. And Rain acts so cutely in the show! I love the songs, especially I Think I Love You by Byul. It is such a hilarious show without being stupidly dumb. And I love the house, aptly named Full House:

The show is simple, no fancy plot, so it may get a bit irritating when Rain and Song Hae Gyo just dingdongdingdong I like you I don't like you. But I love the fashion in the show, and the cars they drive (all different models of Mercedes) :) And of course, this is the show which made me fall in love with Kim Sung Soo:

Sarang rating: 4/5 - for its simplicity, sweetness and ability to make me laugh and cry at the same time.

4. Love Story in Harvard

A young love story set at the famed Ivy League school in the United States. Jin Xianyu, a 1st year law student at Harvard Law, enters into a rivalry with classmate Alex Hong for the affections of beautiful medical student Lee Soo In. The two men are both from prestigious families, while Soo In is from a poor family. When all three returned to Korea, Xianyu and Alex end up becoming opposing counsels for a high profile case involving a Chemical Company and a small village affected by the pollutants emitted by a nearby factory owned by the Chemical Company. Ironically, Soo In applied to conduct medical research for an organisation which was linked to the Chemical Company. How did Soo In's involvement in the case affect her relationship with the two guys? Who did she finally end up with?

I like the show because it's law-related and the actors and actress look good (besides the fact that the girl has crossed-eye) It was interesting to see the Harvard campus (which I later sadly found out, the show was not filmed in Harvard because the uni did not permit filming within the campus. hur hur..) Anyhow, the environmental case thickened the plot so that the show was not just on lovey dovey couples.

Sarang rating: 4/5 - for being legally related and having cutely romantic scenes.

5. Spring Waltz

The story begins with Eun-young’s plane ride to Austria, where she happens to sit next to Song In-na, who is on her way to meet her childhood love, Jae-ha. However, Jae-ha, who has now grown up to be a young, accomplished pianist in Austria, seems not pleased with meeting In-na again after 15 years for some reason. Eun-young, on the other hand, excited about her first overseas trip, bumps into Phillip (Jae-ha’s manager and best friend), who has mistaken her as In-na whom he was suppose to pick up at the airport. On her train ride to a classical concert - a gift from Phillip – Eun-young meets Jae-ha, who is also on his way to his concert. Despite him displaying his reluctance and indifference to be friendly to Eun-young, the two are immediately attracted to each other – especially for Jae-ha, because of the way she reminds him of his long-lost childhood love (and that is not Song In-na for him). After the concert, Jae-ha meets Eun-young again, but soon finds out that she is in fact Phillip’s love interest.

The plot thickens when Eun-young and Jae-ha found out that they were actually childhood sweethearts. Eun-young had a heart problem and needed money for her heart surgery. Soo Ho (the current Jae-ha) was a delinquent whose father abandoned him in the beautiful Cheongsan Island and Eun-young's mother took care of him. Unfortunately, Soo Ho's father stole Eun-young's mother's money and ran away. Eun-young's mother died in a car accident while looking for Soo Ho's father and the kids were left to fend for themselves. Eun-young kept suffering from relapses and Soo Ho felt that he had to do something for her. The opportunity arose when the parents of a dead kid, Jae-ha, spotted Soo Ho in the hospital and found that he looked strikingly similar to Jae-ha. They decided to take him with them to Canada in exchange for Eun-young's heart surgery fees. Soo Ho left Eun-young all alone in Korea. Coupled with the lie made by his parents that Eun-young died on the operating table, Soo Ho lost hope in finding her again and decided to assume the identity of Jae-ha. What happened when they find out the truth? Will Eun-young be able to forgive Soo Ho for leaving her?

I ADORE THIS SHOW. Ok I am biased. Coz it's the show I am currently watching. This show is the best Korean show I have ever seen because of the wonderfully good looking cast (especially Daniel Henney) and the picturesque scenery of the snow-capped mountains and quaint houses in Austria. And I SO LOVE the songs!!! So sweet! One Love by Loveholic and Love Poem (the piano piece Jae-ha composed when he was in love with Eun-young) Oh gosh please please watch this show if you can. I cried like hell watching this. hahaha.. And ok my dear Sister, I have to thank you for introducing the show to me :)

Jae-ha & Eun-young

the romantic island where the young couple spent their tender years. the beach is heart-shaped! the director took forever to find this beach in Korea.

Daniel Henney! *drools*

Sarang rating: 5/5 - I did say, I am biased. :)

Ok I am done. :)
So sorry for the long and draggy post, especially for people who don't like Korean dramas.

Sarang Haeyo to everyone out there! Hope you find your Sarang soon and stop fantasising over Korean shows. Honestly, such lovesick guys really don't exist, so for those who have already found your Sarang, love him with all your heart and don't expect him to do sickeningly sweet things like deliver 50 flower pots to your house. Nevertheless, who ever said we should stop watching them? :)

And of course, how could I ever forget? Sarang Haeyo to the boyfriend! Thank you for bearing with my nonsense and my PMS-es. You are really very patient with me and I really appreciate it. :) -muah-

which way

"Would you tell me please which way I should walk from here?"

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.

"I don't care where - " said Alice.

"Then it doesn't matter which way to walk. If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there," said the Cat.

HOUSE launch party

The launch of House, the newest spa opened by the Spa Esprit Group. It is located at 8d Dempsey Road, taking over one entire army barrack (which makes it freaking huge). There are 28 spa/facial rooms with uninhibited views of lush greenery thanks to the full length glass panes, as well as huge jacuzzis made of stone (one in each of the female and male shower rooms), a sauna with stone chairs for mud wraps, a studio for yoga classes, function rooms (for company retreats), a restaurant and a bar where bartenders will concoct the nicest cocktails right after your treatment.

For both women and men as men are getting vain too!

After a champagne, vodka orange, Cosmopolitan and Stella Artois, I hopped into Daddy's car and feasted my eyes on the rows of mansions in the area. One had an underground basement which I could see 12 limos neatly parked inside, another had an open garage with 5 Ferraris.

All I want is a pink Lambo. :)

the irony:

A Daily Mail investigation has revealed that far from saving the planet, the extravaganza will generate a huge fuel bill, acres of garbage, thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions, and a mileage total equal to the movement of an army.

The most conservative assessment of the flights being taken by its superstars is that they are flying an extraordinary 222,623.63 miles between them to get to the various concerts - nearly nine times the circumference of the world. The true environmental cost, as they transport their technicians, dancers and support staff, is likely to be far higher.

The total carbon footprint of the event, taking into account the artists' and spectators' travel to the concert, and the energy consumption on the day, is likely to be at least 31,500 tonnes of carbon emissions, according to John Buckley of Carbonfootprint.com, who specialises in such calculations.

Throw in the television audience and it comes to a staggering 74,500 tonnes. In comparison, the average Briton produces ten tonnes in a year.

The concert will also generate some 1,025 tonnes of waste at the concert stadiums - much of which will go directly into landfill sites.

Moreover, the pop stars headlining the concerts are the absolute antithesis of the message they promote - with Madonna leading the pack of the worst individual rock star polluters in the world.

Sepermodel Kate Moss, another profligate polluter through her use of private jets, is producing a T-shirt for the event. Yet, Gore is touting the concerts as 'carbon neutral'. So how can that be?

priceless

Dr Francis Schaeffer, a great Christian scholar, decided to take a weekend off to visit Paris with a couple of his students. One night, as they strolled the streets of Paris, they saw a prostitute on a street corner. To the students’ horror, they watched their mentor walk right up to the woman. He said, “How much do you charge?”

“Fifty dollars.”

He eyed her up and down and said, “Nah, that’s too little.”

“Oh yeah, for Americans, it’s one hundred and fifty dollars.”

He stepped back again, “That’s still too low.”

She quickly said, “Uhh, oh yeah, the weekend rate for Americans is five hundred dollars.”

“No, that’s still too cheap.”

By this time she was a little irritated. She said, “What am I worth to you?”

He responded, “Lady, I couldn’t possibly pay you what you are worth, but let me tell you about somebody who already has.”

The two students watched as their mentor – right there and then – knelt with her on the sidewalk and led her in a prayer to commit her life to Christ.

thank you XIX

For a surprise birthday cake at cheng's place! :) I haven't met up with you guys since CNY so it was a really nice gathering. It's a good time to meet up because many of those studying overseas are back! Hi to Kat (who looks so good now!) and YZ (who gave his classic line while playing Taboo. The word was 'virgin' and a taboo word was 'sex'. So YZ conveniently said, 'I have never f**ked before so I am a?' Good job. I thought Taboo was a family fun game)

Anyway, thank you guys for dinner, Taboo, pool, cake and fun! Meet up soon!

our future leader?

He must have been damn bloody pissed with his officer and the whole system. See story and the email. I wonder why he didn't just complain to his father? :p

But honestly, sometimes there is just no other way but to bash through hierarchy to get things done. Many say that he could get away with it because he is you-know-who's son/grandson. He may have gotten away with a simple reprimand now. But don't forget, because of this seemingly impetuous act of his, he probably lowered his chance of becoming the next leader of our country. And for that, I respect him. If he joins WP, I will definitely vote for him. hur hur...

the line and pink gifts

Dinner at The Line was amazing! I like their small servings so I can eat a wide variety of food!!! Yummy! Especially the tiramisu. Comparable to the Manhattan Fish Market one. MFM's is more silky while The Line's more fluffy. Both melt in your mouth too. I like! :) Thank you Daddy and Mummy!
So sorry but I don't fancy taking photos of food and posting them on my blog because I am usually too busy eating to take photos. :p

I love my sister's present for me! She made me wear the pink yukata she bought from japan:

And of course, my babypoo's pink present for me which you can see from the above photos, delivered to my house at 3pm by a cute uncle who stared at the receipt and said, "Err.. hi, are you 'my dear'?"
That's the romantic present. There is also the practical present he gave to me a few weeks back, a simple black 28-inch Samsonite suitcase. Useful to bring to the US. Empty. To come back full of factory outlet stuff. Thank you dear!!! :) -muah-

happy birthday to me

On this beautiful day when Wendy Goh was born, 22 years later, she wants to thank her wonderful family and friends who have made her who she is now.

Mummy
For her incessant naggings and yellings at me to study, not spend so much time going out with my friends or being a kapo in prefectorial board, council and law club. And for her charitable nature when it comes to buying LV bags and ferragamo shoes for me, just so that I feel like the most pampered girl in the world. No matter how much we quarrel, just know that I love you so so much and no one, NO ONE, can ever ever replace you in my heart. I know it's payback time once I start working, but trust me, it is not a burden to me. It's time for me to show my appreciation for all you have done for me. I love you Mummy.

Daddy
For gladly being my chauffeur regardless of wherever I want to go and never complaining (unless I haven't come out from the party and he is waiting at a no waiting zone or along the roadside - that is purely my fault), and for paying for everything else mummy refuses to pay for so that I will be an even more pampered girl, Thank you Daddy! I love you too.

Sister
For being irritated at me when I was born because I robbed her away from my parents' attention which she had been basking in for 11 years before I came along. For chasing the shrieking and noisy me out of her room when her friends came over to gossip about school. And for growing together, and understanding each other better as I grew older (the age gap seems to narrow as you grow older). We are not the best of friends or soulmates yet, but I know one day we will reach there. I love you my Sister.

Grandmothers
My maternal grandmother who gave me everything I wanted within her means. Especially cooking my favourite food (yes that's a very good way to tell me you love me) like Chicken Rendang and all the delicious Peranakan food. For calling me mak-nenek when I was a cheeky kid, and making me love my Peranakan heritage. She can't remember me now, because she has gone severely senile, but I know deep down inside, she will never ever forget me.

My paternal grandmother who also pampered me and cooked my favourite food (see, that's why I am so fat. Go one grandma's house - eat, go another ah ma's house - eat). For making tonic soups and bird's nest for me every Sunday and in return I thread her needles and divide her medicine up.

Boyfriend
To my ex-boyfriends who taught me how to love AND not to love, who made me who I am now so I can give my all to my current boyfriend, Tris.

To Tris, who has done so much for me, who loves me regardless of my pouting, crying, and acting cute. He always says he doesn't do much, but to me, he is the most wonderful gift God has given to me this year and I hope we will last for a long long time. I wuv yew!

Friends
Friends come and go, but true friends remain true even if they had gone overseas for a year, or if you have lost contact (and found each other on facebook) or if you simply are too busy to meet up. True friends are those who, even when you haven't talked for a while, you can still share your deepest secrets.
Special thanks to pre-university friends: Chwee Ying, Doreen darling, and the other Councillors; uni friends: CX, Lilly, Genevieve and everyone else who remembered my birthday and sent me their well-wishes.
Sometimes, you don't know who your friends are until they pop out of the blue to wish you a Happy Birthday when you have already forgotten theirs. *guilty look*

God
For creating me, for being my most powerful source of motivation and love. For bestowing upon me Your love through the people you have brought into my life. You are so so great and amazing. I don't need to see You to believe You exist. I know you do, because my family and friends exist. You give Your love through them, and I will give my love to You back through them, family, friends, strangers and even enemies. Thank you my Lord, and may You bless the world forever.

I prayed at midnight to thank You for bringing me into this world, and asked You to lead the way. I didn't know how You were going to help me, but You did, by letting me chat with someone I haven't chatted with for so long, so I could learn more about You, and I know You will always guide my way.

No material gifts can express Your love for me. And you give me the most precious gifts I have: Jesus, my family, Tris and the most beautiful blog I have ever seen in my entire life because it is dedicated to me, friends and a powerful conversation with someone who was eversowilling to deprive himself of sleep to chat with me about You until the wee hours of the morning. You know who you are. Thank you.

I wish myself a Happy Birthday. :)

harry potter

the movie is getting darker and darker. I like. This means more depth and fewer shrieking kids in the cinema. It's amazing how Rowling managed to make it from a kid-friendly, happy sunshine Hogwart's with Nimbus 2000, Quidditch, House Cups, wonderful teachers and headmaster to a dark and sinister tale of a sad Hogwart's with an autocratic headmistress who is perpetually dressed in pink. Evil lurks everywhere and there are less childish jokes. There is no more fight between Griffindor and Slytherin in school. The fight is worst, Harry against the evil Voldemort. Watching it made me feel like the Dementors have really come to suck my happiness away.

Nevertheless, it was wonderful. Dark and brooding. With deeper underlying meanings. Kids may still appreciate the beauty of Hogwart's and treat Umbridge and Voldemort as the bad guys in the show. But there is so much more to it. Like the effects of a dictatorship, illicit student organisations and curfews. The idea was not as obvious as shows like V for Vendetta, but Rowling actually managed to put the evils of a dictatorship into a children's book. Kudos to her.

My most favourite character in the Order is Luna Lovegood. I love the way she speaks, and I love the things she say. So practical and loyal.
Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure

I don't like Cho Chang. So bimbotic. Hur hur...

The Order of the Phoenix is not my most favourite in the series. I like Prisoner of Azkaban the most because it was a beautiful yet not so kiddish story with lessons to be learnt. Trust in a person even though no one else believes him (Sirius Black for e.g. - by the way, he looks really hot in Order) and believing in yourself (Harry Potter when he never ever practised yet had to use the Expecto Patronum spell when he first encountered the Dementors).

Catch Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix if you can!

On another note, talk about foreign talent coaching our budding corporate lawyers to be. I love T@n Cheng H@n, the only Head of a Faculty whom I know emails the students personally to wish them good luck for their exams. :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dim Sum Dollies on Sunday with tris, ying and daryl was good. Not fantastic like blow my mind, because the jokes didn't come out as well as they could have, had the show been played elsewhere. Nevertheless, it was satisfying because at least there is public awareness and seemingly politically apathetic Singaporeans understood the satire. At least a message was sent. Good job Dollies!
