First stop: food in our hotel! Interestingly, the restaurant in Hyatt is called Article One.

Article One of the U.S. Constitution states, erm.. nah forget it, it's too long. Basically about the legislative powers. If you are interested, you can find it here.

As for me, I was more interested in the awesome key lime pie with oreo crust. Happiness to be eating yummy food and not worry about statutes for once.

Then off we went for our US history lesson!

The first building we meet is the Russell Senate Office Building. Built between 1903-1908, it is the oldest of the Senate office buildings.

Next up, how can two lawyers (I mean one lawyer and one pupil :p) go to the capital of US and not see the US Supreme Court?

The CAPITOL

The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. It has housed the meeting chambers of the Senate and the House of Representatives for almost two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.

The Smithsonian! We were only interested in the Natural History Museum so tada! Biggy elephant and dinosaurs!

Do I look like the sort who likes dinosaurs? I was only at the Natural History Museum for one reason and one reason only ;)

The Hope Diamond is a large, 45.52 carats (9.10 g), fancy deep-blue diamond. The Hope Diamond is blue to the naked eye because of trace amounts of boron within its crystal structure, but it exhibits red phosphorescence under UV light. It is famous for supposedly being cursed. So mysterious and scary right? Perhaps that's what makes it more beautiful and enigmatic.

The Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is a large, tall, sand-colored obelisk. It was constructed to commemorate the first U.S. president, George Washington. The monument, made of marble, granite, and sandstone, is both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk in height standing 555 feet 5⅛ inches (169.294 m).

The Washington Monument reflection can be seen in the aptly named Reflecting Pool, a rectangular pool extending to the west toward the Lincoln Memorial. So it's supposed to look like that.

Unfortunately we didn't have the fortune to do that because it was Memorial Day weekend and the area was closed to prepare for some concert the next day. So we just took silly photos with it.

Not sure if you noticed, but the sky is exceptionally blue and beautiful in D.C.. I never realised it when I was there because I didn't really bother looking up (who does?). It was only after looking through my photos did I realise the photos from D.C. look the best precisely because of the bright, beautiful blue sky, spared the sore sight of tall buildings like NYC where you just don't know where you are going and only street signs direct you. I love walking in D.C.; it is so peaceful and calming. Perhaps it's because there is an inexplicable comfort knowing that this place is well protected. Or maybe it's just that there is no mad rush here coz there's just no shopping. HAHA...

First up, met with Wai Han and Cuilin (whom I haven't met since VJ), together with their other halves. It was like a triple date in Dave & Busters.

The cool thing was that right after she took the photo, one of the waiters came up to give her a postcard of the picture! Talk about good service in a Michelin star restaurant.

Even their restrooms are so cute! hahaha...

That's my new blouse from H&M by Matthew Williamson. I brought so much coldwear in vain because the weather was so hot. So I had to buy lots of blouses in NY (and I am not complaining! heehee...)

Then we went walk walk and saw the Parsons school for design. I think this is the one where they filmed Project Runway. Is that right?

Transit at Doha, in the middle of what seems to be a desert, with a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. And I thought Singapore's weather was crazy enough.

There's an A&W in Doha! haha... A sucky one though. With root beer float but no waffles. Ugh... We get back our change in Qatar Riyal and the boyfriend poses with the rare note.

After touching down in JFK airport, we are taken to Grand Central Station, the station of all stations in NY. :)

Squirrels are a common sight in the East Coast, especially the Central Park region. I met another one in Washington D.C.! It was so cute until it started chasing me. Catch it in my D.C. post coming up soon!

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY!

Trivia: Do you know that the Statue of Liberty is green in colour? This is because the Statue's copper has naturally oxidized to form its familiar "patina" green coating.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. She was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

That's Ellis Island in the background. Ellis Island is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. It was added to the National Park System in May of 1965 and through extensive restoration, its main building opened over a quarter century later on September 10, 1990 as a national museum of immigration.

After Liberty Island, we took a slow walk to Wall Street.

We walked a little bit more and found Ground Zero

I do feel for those who died on 9-11, but I have to say, the US government is really hyping it up way too much. Way too much propaganda don't you think? Oh well...

To end day one, we went to Century 21 which, I agree with Pet, really sucks. Sigh... I was so disappointed on my first day in NY wrt shopping. But it's ok, I still had 9 more days! :)

Finally! So sorry for not blogging for so long. Went to the US and came back with a flu. Went to Tan Tock Seng on Monday to check. They isolated me in a nice single ward and brought meals to me the whole day! Thank God I didn't get H1N1. For those who just got back from US or any affected areas and are not feeling well, please do be socially responsible and go down to TTSH for a check up. It's free! Do your bit to not spread the flu to your loved ones.

I love Holy Week. Re-enacting the Stations of the Cross reminds us of His journey to the Cross and how He, an innocent man, died for all of us.

The boyfriend went for Stations and Veneration with me on Good Friday, and it must have been an interesting experience for him. He probably never knelt that much in his life. Usually by the 10th station, my knees will be aching, but I will always bear in mind how much more He suffered for us.

I mean, kneeling versus nailing? Jesus certainly beats me hands down.

This year, the Holy Week is extremely special to me. My darling Doreen got baptised! I am really really glad for her to have God in her life now. Praise the Lord for her salvation!

A particular verse called out to me today.

I love love love the show!!! Especially when it featured my pink-orange pradas! I was squealing in the cinema when I saw it and heard Suze say "these are genuine Pradas!" Hahaha...

I have the same symptoms as Rebecca Bloomwood. There is this sudden adrenalin rush whenever I step into a shop, smell the new leather of all the bags and shoes and touch the silky soft material of clothes. Those in the party room can verify my acute sense of smell because I can detect LV goods which have a distinct smell, as well as Jaliy's new Prada purse even before seeing it! And there is the experience of an orgasmic high when I can actually whip out my credit card and pay for the item, and then that beloved darling finally belongs to me.

But it's true. After the excitement fades, I need to be happy again. Which means, I need to shop again. It's like taking a drug, or smoking I guess. When you are down and out, you just need to do it, and then when the rush is over, you need to experience it again.

That is an addiction. And addictions are bad.

I need to learn how to get over it. So how do addicts overcome their addiction? There's something called COLD TURKEY.

1. I have a Lent Promise, a covenant I made with God, which I have not broken as yet (and in my typical lawyerly self, save in situations where purchases were made out of necessity, i.e. food, transport, daily amenities, my monthly spa to relieve my backache and a pair of shoes my mum bought for me). Yes, I have not shopped for 26 whole days. Oh and the tickets to Confessions of a Shopaholic. :p

2. We booked our tickets to New York (oh that's spending too huh?)! Flying by Qatar and hoping that our Middle Eastern experience will be AMAZING! :) And to prove to everyone that I can overcome my addiction, I shall endeavour to not spend lavishly and to curb my shopping. The boyfriend will be more than glad to help me do so, especially when we are in New York. So too bad Woodbury Common. I cannot see you this year.

The economic situation is not an excuse for you to spend more. It is a time for you to think wisely before you spend. If you really think that you are so rich such that spending so much doesn't mean a thing to you, then you live in denial and extreme insecurity. You don't need expensive things to make you happy. You need to build your self-confidence to last forever. You need to realise there are many other things out there that can make you happy.

Like family (a baby niece helps - at least you can say you are buying for her and not for yourself).

Like love (spending on your boyfriend can be really sweet - or just another way of being able to shop with justification).

Like God who doesn't need you to spend any money on Him. He doesn't need any.

Of course, occasional indulgences to reward yourself aren't too bad. Just don't go overboard.

And if all else fails, I am sure little purchases can make you happy too. At least the hole burnt is tinier. :)

So here's to my success! :)

It's a little late for me to blog about V day but here goes!

The boyfriend kindly booked a room at the Fullerton on Friday night so that I could go back to work on Saturday conveniently.

A nice gift set of complimentary couple bath robes awaits us on the bed and the pretty bathtub with rose petals and aromatherapy oils invites us to soak a little stress away :)

And how can we forget about food, especially when it's delivered to your doorstep?

Bruno is an eight-year-old German boy who leads a very comfortable life in Berlin during WWII. His father is a high ranking Nazi officer, who is posted to the nearby concentration camp as its commander. Things change when the family has to move due to his father’s new post. In his innocence, Bruno sees the nearby concentration camp as a ‘farm’ and wonders why its inhabitants are always wearing striped pajamas. Eventually Bruno becomes friends with a Jewish boy his own age who lives on the other side of the fence.

This is a highly depressing show as it depicts children's innocence and fierce loyalty to each other despite the harsh realities of life. I am so grateful to Waihan for introducing it to me! Thanks babe!

I am NOT a fan of graphic novels but this isn't too bad. It's super geek but at least I still get it. Apparently the geeks don't really like it. The boyfriend and khel say that it didn't do the novel justice. Oh well... I am just thankful I didn't fall asleep during the show.

But of course, I am extremely excited about an upcoming movie...

I didn't know Isla Fisher is married to Sacha Baron Cohen, the guy who acted as Ali G and Borat (they are the same person???)!!!

Regardless, I am still watching Confessions of a Shopaholic! :)

Anyway, the guys and I had dinner at Botak Jones which recently (?) opened at the Youth Park opposite Orchard Cine.

Then some shopping at marina, where the guys went crazy over sesame street.

I will be taking the weekend to clear up my room full of junk and notes. The first thing I cleared was my first teddy bear given by my sister. When I was young, I really really wanted a big big teddy bear (bigger than me) so that I could hug it to sleep and feel nice and warm. So my sister got it for me one Christmas and I hugged it till I grew bigger than the bear and it soon found a comfortable spot, taking up the entire upper cupboard space.

You will be sorely missed, my dusty teddy.

(I bet my sis will ask me to buy a big big teddy bear for ashley next time.)

Last night I was deciding whether to put my Civ Pro notes on my living room sofa for the exam today so that I don't confuse them with my pile of notes for the other subjects in my room. And the first thing I thought of was, "wait... if my house got burgled into, the first thing the burglar sees is going to be my notes. What if he steals them?" Then I was reminded of ying's blogpost with the article:

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER TRY TO STEAL A LAW STUDENT'S LAPTOP

A thief learned the mistake of trying to steal a law student's laptop last week after after becoming a punching bag for an Arizona State student he tried to rip off. Armed with a baseball bat, the intruder, Gabriel Saucedo, allegedly climbed through an open window into Alex Botsios' apartment, waking the student and threatening to smash his head in.

Botsios was willing to let Saucedo take his wallet and guitars. Then the robber made the mistake that ultimately landed him in the hospital -- he went for the laptop. According to Botsios, he said "Dude, no -- please, no! I have all my case notes...that's four months of work!" Saucedo, obviously underestimating the fury of an overstressed, overworked first-year, was unsympathetic. That's when Botsios could take no more.

Wrestling Saucdeo to the floor, Botsios separated the bat from the thief and repeatedly punched him in the face. When it was all over, police had to get Saucedo stitched up before charging him with armed robbery and kidnapping, while Botsios only suffered some scrapes and a bruised knuckle. Most importantly, at least to the student, is that his laptop, which he called "his baby," escaped unharmed. Next time, Saucedo might want to try robbing a third-year student, as they're generally more docile.

YES I WOULD DO THE SAME THING FOR MY NOTES!!! On the day before my exam, I would rather him steal my Ferragamos than my notes (without notes --> fail PLC --> cannot get called to Bar --> cannot practise --> no money --> cannot buy shoes). I would clobber anyone who wants to take my notes to death with my stilettos.

Can you imagine the headlines in the papers?

My old earrings board.

You might remember my old earrings board made a year back. Well the fur got dirty, so I decided to make a new one. :)

All my skincare and cosmetics stuff! I had to throw out/give away so many products which I bought but were not compatible with my skin. So sad... :(

Most used stuff in front, and products I don't really use at the back. The Gucci box holds my sanitary pads and the container on the bottom right holds my combs and scrunchies.

Yay! My most favourite products! I love SK-II and Chanel especially! The former for skincare and the latter for cosmetics. They last a very long time so they are quite worth the money. :)

These are my most favourite fragrances.

I wear Lovely to sleep because it makes me feel really, erm Lovely! :) Just like Marilyn Monroe who was rumoured to go to sleep with "only a few drops of No. 5", you should wear perfume to sleep too because the scent really makes a huge difference to how you feel the moment you wake up.

Vera Wang is for evenings when I want to feel princessy. Hahaha...

And my all time favourite, Chance! :) I never leave home without it!

Hairbands! They make me feel so happy coz they brighten up my hair while keeping it neat and nice! :)

my nail polishes (with boxes of golf balls behind - sorry la.. space constraints)

I love Chanel nail polish coz they last for years without me having to add anything to prevent the polish from hardening inside the bottle. Plus they are very easy to apply! I also love the rectangular packaging coz it's much easy to store them side by side and I can see the Double C logos everytime I open my cupboard. :)

A gift from tris! :)

for me to put all my beloved cufflinks! I adore cufflinks! They brighten up a boring black and white uniform... i mean litigation attire, especially since girls don't wear ties.

I found this really functional belts/scarves hanger at Ikea.

It fits nicely in your wardrobe just like a hanger so you don't have to worry about space constraints.

pinafore & pacifier

Ashley went for her cousin's birthday party in a pretty pinafore but she was asleep throughout the party.

When she got home, she woke up and felt quite uncomfortable with her pinafore so she started making noise. We decided to remove her pinafore and stuff her mouth with a pacifier.

But look what happened!
